What is it?
They are half of the world population; they have everything equal to their counterpart. Their brain, capability, & skills are not less than those who dominate them. But as a culture of dominance and discrimination, they are being dominated still now. Hey, don’t be surprised, I’m talking about gender discrimination, discrimination against women.
All though women are getting equal rights in many countries of the world but in many parts of the world their rights are still denied, their participation is still ignored; and their dream of equality is still unfulfilled.
Why I’m interested?
Firstly, development is impossible without equal participation of women. Secondly, youth, the real change maker have lots to do to make gender equality happened.
Trisha is a student of Dhaka University, Bangladesh. As my classmate I know her well, an extraordinarily brilliant and charming girl with enormous energy, generosity, and confidence. She has a dream to be a politician to serve the country in broader context. But her father confined her to be a housewife because a girl should not do manly job. She wants to marry a man of her choice but her father has selected a high profile boy as her escort for whole life. Her choice, voice & decision in case of her own life are denied highly.
My mother’s contribution in family is more than my father in some cases but her voice is hardly heard in decision making. This is not only in family; society also thinks women are less competent than man, state also passive about their rights.
Although we are talking more and arranging uncountable seminar about women rights, our progress is very insignificant. Pathetically a number of our male folk still today possess a negative mentality about equal rights of women. Moreover putting all of our efforts in vain, pathetic show of gender discrimination from family to state is going on. Teasing, physical and mental torture, sexual harassment and all other unscrupulous behavior with my sister is still on upward.
There are many tangible factors and intangible forces behind this stagnation. So To translate the dream of equality into reality some effective and efficient steps should be taken by all important partners of society. A paradigm shift of state, a breakthrough in the structured mentality of society and a conceptual clarity is highly needed. Government should take steps that are effective & fruitful to ensure women participation in all major decision making process with equal dignity. Steps should also be taken to eradicate the dogmatic idea of men about women.
Youth must take the responsibility to change this stagnant condition of inequality through their active participation and should raise their voice against all inhuman and discriminatory behavior against women.
Development is a long cherished dream, Gender equality with equal opportunity and participation in all stages of state and society should be ensured fully for the sake of development. And to ensure this equality youth must play their expected role.
